  • Our users with keratin-treated hair found that it degraded their keratin faster than other sulfate free shampoos

Is L’oreal Sulfate Free Shampoo really Sulfate-Free?

loreal sulfate free shampoo reviews

Ironically, it can be difficult finding a sulfate free shampoo that is truly sulfate-free. Brands of shampoo by L’Oreal replace sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) with different cleansers such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate. But yes, the ingredients are really sulfate free.

But isn’t Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate a sulfate?

No. Cosmetic sulfates refer precisely to the following: sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, and ammonium lauryl ether sulfate. These sulfates are very potent and can be quite punishing on hair that is fragile, curly, chemically treated, dry, or damaged.

Although they are both derived from palm and coconut oils, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate is NOT a sulfate. Rather, it is a type of surfactant that was specifically developed to be gentler and less irritating than SLS, even to those with sensitive skin. Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate is less irritating than SLS because it is a larger molecule which is unable to penetrate through the skin barrier.

Is L’oreal Sulfate Free Shampoo Safe to Use?

The safety of a shampoo is determined by the effects of its individual ingredients. In a review published in the Journal of the American College of Toxicology, it was found that sodium lauryl sulfoacetate is safe as a cosmetic additive in strengths available on the market.

What Customers Are Saying About L’Oreal Paris EverStrong Hydrate Shampoo

Shania R. – This shampoo is pure magic!

I suffer from chemically damaged hair that is dry, frizzy, and extremely difficult to comb through. After a single use, I immediately noticed a difference; combing through my curly hair was no longer a chore. There was less snapping and breakage when brushing through the tangles. Using my previous shampoo, my hair would painfully snap every time I combed it; this is no longer an issue.

Having longer hair, I expected the shampoo to add weight to my hair, but this wasn’t the case. There was no need to add extra oils or serums to my hair either.

The best part was that this shampoo didn’t aggravate my eczema. Before I switched over to L’Oreal EverStrong Sulfate Free Shampoo, the eczematous patches around my forehead and neck would often become irritated and peel. The eczema was an immense issue which has finally been resolved. I am in disbelief at how much my hair has already improved and I haven’t even used this product for over a week!

If you find that your hair is constantly dry, frizzy, or chemically damaged, switching to a sodium lauryl sulfate free shampoo like L’Oreal EverStrong Hydrate Shampoo may be worthwhile. For $7, you are getting silkier hair, less frizz, non-enflamed eczema, and less breakage. It’s definitely worth the money.
